Job description

The Mom Project is excited to partner with a team that provides high-quality, low-cost legal services to children and families on matters ranging from domestic violence and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status predicate orders, to child custody and support. They have an excellent opportunity for a bilingual (Spanish) Legal Assistant.

We seek an energetic, culturally sensitive bilingual (Spanish/English) Legal Assistant with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice advocacy to represent traditionally underserved populations.

Responsibilities: The bilingual (Spanish/English) Legal Assistant is responsible for providing legal assistance to staff attorneys on matters ranging from Special Immigrant Juvenile Status Cases, Domestic Violence Restraining Orders, and other general family law issues. Tasks include, but are not limited to: managing attorney’s calendar and appointments, service of pleadings, translation/transcribe documents, conforming files, assisting clients in gathering evidence, going to Court, etc,.

Qualifications:

  1. Bilingual in English and Spanish. Spanish fluency is required.
  2. Ability to be flexible and work efficiently and effectively under pressure
  3. Ability to receive and implement feedback
  4. Well-organized, motivated, creative, and independent, yet also able to work in a team-oriented environment
  5. Commitment to providing services with cultural humility and trauma informed care
  6. Strong skills in proofreading
  7. Excellent organizational abilities with attention to details
  8. Ability to multitask effectively and prioritize workload
  9. Commitment to the the mission and work
  10. Prior legal experience is a plus, but not a requirement

Duties

  1. Assist in drafting and serving legal documents
  2. Manage and organize legal documents and case files
  3. Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, managing calendars, conflict checking, and handling correspondence
  4. Assist in preparing for trials, hearings, and meetings
  5. Handle data entry tasks accurately and efficiently
  6. Support attorneys in project management and coordination
  7. Greet and welcome visitors in a professional and friendly manner
  8. Answer and direct phone calls to the appropriate person or department
  9. Transcribe documents and correspondence accurately
  10. Handle sensitive information with confidentiality
  11. Other administrative tasks as needed

Hours and Days per Week: 40 hours per week, exempt. Monday through Friday 8:30am – 5pm.

Compensation/Benefit: Compensation will be dependent on experience ($22-$25/hour). Benefits include 10 holidays (plus December 25th-January 1st every year), vacation, sick leave, and health/dental/vision insurance (for employees 35+ hours per week).
