Job description

Our client is an award-winning independent book publisher based in NYC. As they have grown, their production department has become overloaded, and are hiring their first production assistant to assist Production Director and Managing Editor. This is not a job with a path toward editorial, and it requires no prior experience in the publishing industry.

  • The ideal candidate for this job is someone who is extremely detail oriented and organized.
  • You should have an eagle eye for both the written word (including proofreading, i.e. grammar) and also for numbers.
  • You should feel comfortable working with forms.
  • You will be doing everything from checking book interiors to making sure editorial corrections have been properly input to final interiors, to circulating book copy among the editorial staff, to sending authors and agents comp copies of galleys and finished books.

This is a fantastic part-time, permanant role to grow with the firm longterm.

Below is a partial list of responsibilities:

  • Check interior corrections
  • Draft/route cover copy
  • Proofread covers
  • Proofread/copyedit sample chapters and introductions
  • Check printer blues
  • Help with reprints (clean up OCR'd files/font conversions, check covers and interiors, work with Sales Manager to prioritize reprint list)
  • Apply for copyrights and CIP data
  • Check ebooks and report errors
  • Light metadata maintenance
  • Fulfill author/agent comp copies
  • Check invoices against final POs and price scales -forward to Benay
  • Request PO#s from PRH
  • Create Temp covers at beginning of Launch for upload
  • Check on status of titles shipping
  • Follow up reminders and status checks on covers for designers/illustrators/authors

All applicants applying for U.S. job openings must be legally authorized to work in the United States and are required to have U.S. residency at the time of application.
