Job description

Job Title: Part-Time Contract Bookkeeper (Contractor)

Location: Remote (U.S.-based required)

Job Type: Part-Time, 1099 Contract

Reports to: Owner

Hours: Flexible; approx. 10–20 hours per week, depending on client load. Must be available at least 2 hours each day during regular business hours in order to interface with clients.

Compensation: $20-$35 an hour

About Us:

We are a growing bookkeeping business providing professional accounting services to clients across a wide range of industries. Our team supports small to mid-sized businesses with accurate, timely, and insightful financial reporting to help them grow and operate with confidence. We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Part-Time Contract Bookkeeper to join our team and assist with multiple client accounts.

We are seeking someone to be the "right hand" to the business owner - someone who is proactive with strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and who can collaborate with multiple individuals within the team and with clients.

Position Overview:

As a Contract Bookkeeper, you will be responsible for managing ongoing bookkeeping tasks for multiple clients. You’ll handle recording transactions, reconciling accounts, conducting month-end reviews, and preparing and interpreting financial statements. This role requires strong accounting skills, the ability to work independently, and sound judgment to identify unusual activity or expenses across a variety of business types.

The goal is for the person in this role to be able to take over a large portion of the work currently residing with the owner. This includes standard bookkeeping, managing month end close, reviewing deliverables from the team, researching questions from clients, and eventually corresponding with clients directly. Currently, this is more of a "project" due to upcoming client changes. However, we would LOVE for this to be a long-standing arrangement. Right now, our small bookkeeping firm has had a lot of growth and we are maxed out. If we have another strong asset to add to our existing small-but-mighty team, we would be able to enthusiastically accept more clients and thereby provide consistent work for all of our team members.

We support clients in many industries. We need someone who has experience with restaurant accounting specifically and who is comfortable calculating and running payroll. Experience with nonprofits is a plus. In general, our clientele are rapidly growing businesses experiencing their own growing pains. We serve as an outsourced controller and our clients look to us for advice and business acumen. Improving workflows for our clients and being a partner that truly cares about the success of our clients is what sets us apart in our area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations for multiple clients
  • Maintain up-to-date general ledgers and financial records
  • Conduct thorough month-end reviews to ensure data accuracy and completeness
  • Prepare and interpret financial statements (Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, etc.)
  • Identify and communicate unusual or non-standard transactions or expenses
  • Understand industry-specific norms to assess financial activity across client types
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable as needed
  • Collaborate with the internal team to ensure consistent service delivery
  • Respond to client questions and provide clear financial insights
  • Assist with audit preparation or tax support tasks when necessary
  • Manage payroll, both auto and manual

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of bookkeeping or accounting experience
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online (QBO), Excel, and Google Sheets required; experience with additional platforms like Keeper App, Bill, Gusto, and Google Workspace are preferred
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and bookkeeping best practices
  • Experience managing multiple clients/accounts simultaneously
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Familiarity with common expenses and financial behavior across various industries
  • High attention to detail and confidentiality
  • Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Must be able to work independently and meet deadlines

Contract Details:

  • Independent contractor (1099)
  • Fully remote with flexible hours
  • May be assigned to multiple clients across different industries
  • Long-term opportunity based on performance and client satisfaction

All applicants applying for U.S. job openings must be legally authorized to work in the United States and are required to have U.S. residency at the time of application.
