Job description
ROLE OVERVIEW
We are seeking an autonomous, highly technical, and strategically minded Controller / VP of Accounting to run our full-cycle accounting ecosystem from top to bottom. Operating within a complex, multi-faceted staffing and talent marketplace engine with multiple distinct product lines, this role sits at the critical intersection of technical execution and forensic stewardship.
Crucially, you are the ONLY accountant in the organization. While you will manage two non-accountant operational reports (one focused entirely on Pay/Bill processing, and the other on Cash Application/Collections), you carry sole, unassisted accountability for the general ledger, day-to-day bookkeeping, and the technical execution of all month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closes. There is no middle-tier accounting staff to delegate to, and this position requires total self-sufficiency without reliance on the CFO for routine verification, data entry, or operational execution. The ideal candidate pairs an ironclad work ethic with a naturally analytical, forensic mindset to unpack complex transactional flows and safeguard reporting accuracy.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Full-Cycle Autonomous Accounting: Independently execute and take total ownership of the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes. Perform all foundational bookkeeping, complex journal entries, adjustments, and ledger reconciliations independently. Ensure error-free, timely, and complete GAAP-compliant financial reporting without errors
- Forensic Oversight & Data Lineage: Deeply analyze, audit, and trace transactional flows across a complex multi-product line staffing model. Proactively unearth, reconcile, and resolve hidden structural variance or billing inconsistencies across the ecosystem.
- Strategic Financial Partnership: Distill raw general ledger data into dynamic, multi-product line financial insights. Partner directly with the CFO to shape budgeting, rolling cash flow forecasts, and long-range operational strategy.
- Operational Leadership: Directly manage, audit, and guide 2 operational non-accountant specialists (Pay/Bill Specialist & Cash App/Collections). Step in dynamically to audit their downstream processes to ensure lockstep compliance with GL expectations.
- Process Architecture: Construct, reinforce, and document ironclad internal controls, accounting workflows, and systems integrations from the ground up to prevent data leakages between our operational marketplace and general ledger.
- Tax & Compliance Administration: Personally manage and coordinate state-by-state payroll taxes, corporate tax filing preparation, worker's compensation true-ups, and localized regulatory filings unique to multi-state staffing.
CORE TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS
- QuickBooks Online (QBO): Extensive, expert-level hands-on experience is strictly required. You must have a proven track record of managing complex, multi-line corporate ledgers within QBO autonomously.
- Salesforce: Experience with Salesforce is highly preferred (but not required). Ideal candidates will understand data structures and integrations between CRM/front-office platforms and back-office accounting ledgers.
REQUIRED HARD SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Licensure: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) credential is preferred.
- Staffing and/or Talent Marketplace Domain Expertise: Minimum of 5–7+ years of progressive corporate accounting experience, with an absolute requirement for exposure to the unique complexities of the staffing or marketplace industry (e.g., multi-state pay/bill mechanics, VMS systems, diverse client billing terms, complex commission structures).
- Solo Execution: Proven, verifiable history of working as an independent individual contributor who has personally run an entire general ledger and full-cycle close sequence with zero underlying technical staff.
- Systems & ERP Fluidity: Advanced proficiency in navigating and maintaining Quickbooks Online, reporting, automated billing integrations, and advanced Excel modeling.
CRITICAL SOFT SKILLS & PROFESSIONAL TRAITS
- The Forensic Mindset: Possesses a naturally inquisitive, investigative personality. You don't just clear exceptions; you enjoy digging deep into data anomalies, mapping complex workflows, and independently validating root causes behind financial variances.
- Autonomous Ownership: Highly self-reliant and intrinsically motivated. You take profound pride in your craftsmanship, reviewing and catching your own mistakes rather than relying on a supervisor or CFO for hand-holding, validation, or structural push.
- Clear & Collaborative Managerial Boundary-Setting: Able to successfully guide, mentor, and clear obstacles for non-accountant personnel while maintaining clear professional boundaries—ensuring you do not over-delegate technical accounting functions to operational staff.
- Strategic Adaptability: Comfortable pivoting fluidly between high-altitude strategic corporate planning with the executive suite and low-altitude, transactional data-level bookkeeping updates.
