Job description

Core Responsibilities

  • Perform month-end ship cost accrual process including journal entry preparation, match delta analysis, and reconciliation of accrued shipping cost balance sheet accounts (Business Day 3–7 cadence)
  • Research and validate carrier invoices in NetSuite, categorizing shipping activity by current month, prior month, and prior period to determine required accrual amounts
  • Calculate and produce ship cost accrual entries using data from FreightOptics, PowerBI Ship Cost Reconciliation Dashboard, SQL queries (via SQL Server Management Studio), and NetSuite
  • Analyze trends in freight and shipping costs by carrier to identify potential misstatements, known deltas (UPS returns, WROs, service charges, USPS adjustments, OSM pickups, Flavorcloud reclasses), and variances to budget
  • Prepare the monthly ship cost location reclass entries, reallocating costs to each fulfillment center/location by carrier to align GL costs with system margin
  • Coordinate with finance, operations, transportation, data, and IT teams to review monthly P&L and investigate variances
  • Maintain and update detailed SOPs and accounting policy narratives for all ship cost procedures to strengthen internal controls
  • Support external audit and tax teams by preparing schedules, explaining supporting material, and providing documentation as needed
  • Examine shipping data, contracts, carrier onboarding changes, and critical accounting estimates around expense recognition
  • Assist on ad hoc projects and assignments as needed

Qualifications/Skills

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with 3+ years in the transportation/logistics industry
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or related field
  • CPA certification strongly preferred (CPA candidate acceptable)
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP and transportation-specific accounting principles; ability to write technical memos
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUPs, SUMIFs, pivot tables, large data sets)
  • Experience with ERP systems, specifically NetSuite strongly preferred
  • Experience with or ability to quickly learn PowerBI, SQL Server Management Studio, and GlobalProtect VPN environments
  • Familiarity with transportation management software (TMS) preferred
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to meet month-end close deadlines
  • Ability to work independently in a lean, fast-paced accounting environment while collaborating cross-functionally
