Job description

The Mom Project is partnering with a well-known internet company to support their search for an Employment Counsel on a contract basis to join and support their internal legal team during a temporary leave. This role will serve as a trusted legal advisor to HR and business leaders, providing practical, business-focused guidance across a broad range of employment matters.

The ideal candidate is an experienced employment attorney with 5+ years of dedicated U.S. employment law experience, strong knowledge of federal and California employment laws, and prior in-house or embedded legal experience. This person should be comfortable operating independently, managing multiple priorities, and providing timely, risk-based advice in a fast-paced business environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney who can quickly step into an established organization, assess legal and business considerations, and provide clear, actionable guidance with minimal ramp-up time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Employment Law Advice & Counsel
  • Provide day-to-day legal advice and counsel to HR, People teams, and business leaders on a broad range of employment matters.
  • Advise on employee relations, performance management, workplace issues, leave administration, accommodations, and other workforce-related matters.
  • Translate complex employment laws and regulations into clear, practical, and business-friendly recommendations.
  • Help stakeholders understand legal risks while balancing compliance with business objectives.
  • Policy & Process Development
  • Review, develop, and refine employment policies and practices to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws.
  • Provide legal guidance on policies and processes applicable to different employee populations, particularly non-exempt/hourly field employees, including technicians and installers.
  • Review and advise on new workforce processes, including medical accommodation workflows, employee training programs, and related HR initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing policies and processes while mitigating legal and compliance risk.

Legal Research & Risk Assessment

  • Conduct timely, targeted research on complex, emerging, or novel employment law issues.
  • Analyze federal and state employment laws and regulations and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Assess potential employment claims, pre-litigation disputes, demand letters, and other employee-related legal risks.
  • Partner with and coordinate with outside counsel when appropriate.
  • Provide clear recommendations regarding risk mitigation, potential exposure, and appropriate next steps.
  • Collaboration & Business Partnership
  • Develop strong working relationships with HR, People Operations, business leaders, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Serve as a responsive and practical legal partner who can quickly assess issues and provide guidance.
  • Manage multiple matters simultaneously while prioritizing urgent and high-risk issues.
  • Operate with a high degree of autonomy and sound judgment.

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active California Bar membership in good standing is required.
  • 5+ years of dedicated employment law experience with strong knowledge of U.S. federal employment law.
  • Demonstrated experience advising on a broad range of employment matters, including employee relations, performance management, leave, accommodations, and workplace issues.
  • Prior in-house employment counsel or embedded legal advisor experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong ability to assess legal risk and provide practical, business-oriented recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions with limited supervision.
  • Comfortable stepping into an existing legal function and becoming productive quickly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting organizations with large populations of non-exempt, hourly, or field-based employees.
  • Experience advising on employment policies, processes, and workforce programs.
  • Experience working with outside employment counsel.
  • Experience handling pre-litigation matters, demand letters, and employee disputes.
  • Experience supporting organizations experiencing growth or organizational change.
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace, including Gmail, Google Sheets, and Google Calendar.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
