Job description

Job Summary

Our client is seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented HIPAA Compliance Specialist to assist in setting up, implementing, and integrating a comprehensive compliance management system tailored to meet HIPAA regulations. The specialist will work closely with the team to customize the software to fit organization’s needs, train staff on its use, and establish workflows and protocols to ensure ongoing compliance. Once the system is fully operational, the Compliance Specialist will provide documentation and guidance for the team to manage it independently.

Key Responsibilities

Compliance System Implementation:
  1. Lead the setup, configuration, and customization of our chosen compliance software to ensure it aligns with HIPAA requirements.
  2. Develop workflows, templates, and reporting tools within the software for tracking compliance metrics, audits, and corrective actions.
Policy and Procedure Development:
  1. Review current policies and procedures to identify gaps in HIPAA compliance.
  2. Draft or update policies to align with federal regulations and ensure they are embedded into the compliance software.
Training and Education:
  1. Train staff on the use of the compliance software, including how to monitor, document, and address compliance requirements.
  2. Provide guidance on HIPAA regulations and best practices.
Documentation and Handover:
  1. Create a comprehensive handover document detailing system configuration, workflows, and ongoing maintenance steps.
  2. Ensure the team is fully equipped to manage the system independently.
Audit and Risk Assessment:
  1. Conduct an initial risk assessment and internal audit to identify compliance gaps.
  2. Implement tracking mechanisms within the software to monitor risks and ensure timely mitigation.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Health Administration, Compliance, Information Technology, or related field.
  2. In-depth knowledge of HIPAA regulations and their application in various healthcare settings.
  3. Experience with compliance software platforms (e.g., MedTrainer, Compliancy Group, or similar).
  4. Proven track record of managing or implementing compliance systems and policies.
  5. Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Certification in HIPAA compliance, such as Certified HIPAA Professional (CHP) or Certified HIPAA Security Professional (CHSP).
  2. Experience in project management or change management.
  3. Familiarity with cybersecurity best practices as they relate to HIPAA compliance.
