Job description

Are you looking to leverage your analytical skills in a steady career with room to grow and learn?

If you have a background in science, engineering, technology, or law, you already think the way successful tax preparers think—systematically, methodically, and with attention to detail. International tax preparation is fundamentally about solving complex puzzles using structured processes, and we can teach you that part. What we're really looking for are people who share our values, appreciate clear systems and workflows, and genuinely enjoy learning new things. This is a stable, recession-proof field that offers remote flexibility, steady year-round work (no crazy tax season hours), and clear paths for advancement as you master new skills. If you're ready to apply your analytical mind to meaningful work that makes a real difference in people's lives, we'd love to hear from you—even if you don't have tax experience.

And if you're interested in obtaining your IRS Enrolled Agent credential, we'll support you in obtaining it.

Who are we:

Xpatax Solutions, LLC. is an international tax firm specializing in US taxes for Americans living in Germany. Since founding the company in 2017 we've experienced significant growth each year and expect that to continue. As a result we grow our team every year. We have a unique approach to preparing taxes and a big focus on learning, training and development.

We are a values driven company and we're passionate about our core values. These are:

Make a difference: We lead with kindness, compassion and empathy. We help our clients sleep better at night knowing their US taxes are in good hands. We do this by building trust and valuing transparency. We are in a unique position to make a difference in each other's lives by supporting a work-life balance so that this job sustains us without consuming us.

Seek out solutions: We don't just file tax returns, we solve tax puzzles. We are independent thinkers that find answers. We carry our own bags. If we don't know the answer, we seek it out. This allows us to serve our clients by finding solutions, even for complex issues.

Work together like a well-oiled machine: We value teamwork and efficient processes. We help each other out and we get our work done as efficiently as possible. We make things as easy as possible for our clients and ourselves. This allows us to get our work done and get on with our lives.

Passion for learning: Our thirst for learning new things is insatiable. We're excited to tackle new challenges and take in new information. Our brains are already brimming over with new facts and still, we're always collecting more. We love putting this new knowledge to use to provide even better solutions for our clients.

Job Description

This is a fully remote position. A personal computer is required to access our virtual desktop system. We have scheduled team meetings and training. As a quickly growing and expanding firm with a great desire for supporting talent development, this role offers clear advancement paths as you develop expertise in international tax preparation.

This role involves preparing US expat tax returns with specialized international tax complexity, working collaboratively with team members who contribute different areas of expertise. You'll participate in daily team huddles at 9:30am EST Monday–Thursday (participation expected in a home/virtual office setting), receive structured mentorship from senior staff, and help others as you develop your own skills.

This role will involve:

  • Helping our clients sleep better at night knowing their US taxes are in good hands

  • Reviewing documents and extracting necessary income and expense details

  • Documenting calculations and preparing accurate and timely US individual tax returns for clients

  • Responding to client questions about tax returns

  • Applying international tax rules to client situations and developing expertise in the international tax rules affecting our clients

  • Some (supervised and supported) research on certain tax situations

  • Utilizing our project management system to track progress on returns

  • Learning and applying changes in international US tax laws

  • Building relationships with clients to enable us to provide a personalized boutique tax preparation experience, even as we grow and take on more clients

  • Assisting team members in their learning and application of new skills related to international US tax preparation

  • Providing quality and prompt customer service for client inquiries

  • Working as a team player while supporting the continued growth of the firm

  • Additional job duties and/or projects as assigned

If you love systems, structure, and efficiency, you'll thrive here. We've built our practice around clear processes, detailed checklists, and streamlined workflows. We value team members who appreciate that well-designed systems allow us to deliver excellent work efficiently while maintaining work-life balance. We're looking for detail-oriented people who find satisfaction in following streamlined procedures and contributing to process improvements.

You might be the ideal candidate if you:

  • Read our list of core values and think "that's the environment I want to work in!"

  • Value flexibility, teamwork, and opportunities for growth over time

  • Have excellent attention to detail and are passionate about efficient processes

  • Really enjoy using technology to make your work easier. We're a paperless firm and we use a number of cloud-based tools to manage our work. Mastering these is a key to success in our firm

  • Are internationally minded and culturally competent. German language skill is a bonus, but not required as long as you're willing to learn how to understand German tax forms

What we offer:

  • Fully remote part-time job with flexibility within our core hours of 8am to 4pm EST M-F

  • Starting pay of $27/hr with a structured path to increase pay as you develop expertise in international tax preparation

  • A great team collaborating in a values-driven atmosphere where everyone is able to make an impact

  • Lovely clients with a wide variety of interesting and unique situations

  • Steady, year-round tax work instead of busy seasons. Because we work with expats, our work is spread throughout the year. Our busiest time is November through December 15th

  • Paid holidays and time off to support your work-life balance. Once we get through the final tax deadline of the year, we close our office until the new year to relax and reset

Please note: We are posting this position in December but will be closed for the holidays from mid-December through the New Year. We will begin reviewing applications when we return in January. We appreciate your patience and look forward to reviewing your application in the new year.
