Job description

A mid-size Chicago law firm seeking a Litigation Legal Assistant to join our team. This is a highly responsible and rewarding full-time position that offers a competitive salary and outstanding benefits. Along with your resume and cover letter, please send your salary requirements.

Job Description:

This position will work closely with a handful of attorneys in our Chicago office handling drafting and filing of court documents, proofreading motions and orders, general drafting of correspondence, coordinating hearing dates, and general case management support for attorney’s case load and any other duties necessary to support the attorneys’ needs. The position must be exceedingly well organized and flexible. The legal assistant will perform a broad range of case management related duties under supervision as outlined below.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Draft notices and prepare state and federal court filings
  2. Proofread attorneys’ motions and pleadings
  3. File motions, notices, and correspondence electronically using various state and federal court docketing websites
  4. Prepare orders for court and monitor status of court entered orders
  5. Draft and edit correspondence
  6. Perform electronic document conversions
  7. Correspond with opposing counsel and court clerks regarding hearings, motions, courtesy copies, etc. as needed for attorneys
  8. Interact and follow up with attorneys to ensure completion of filings, hearings, and projects
  9. Adhere to tight deadlines provided by court and attorneys
  10. Relieve receptionist as needed

Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent law firm experience.
  2. 3+ years of experience in a law firm
  3. Extremely proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  4. Experience using legal search databases (PACER, LexisNexis, Pohlman, Westlaw) etc.
  5. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  6. Superior written and verbal communication skills
  7. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  8. Knowledge of state and federal court rules and procedures
  9. Ability to maintain confidential records.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  1. Previous insurance defense/asbestos experience

The ideal candidate must be detail oriented, have superior communication, organizational, computer skills, and be able to multi-task. The candidate must also possess excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to work well under pressure, and the desire to take initiative.

Compensation and Benefits Overview: $52,500-$65,000 (DOE)

The pay offered for this role may vary based on factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Eligible employees may also receive bonus opportunities and other forms of compensation, contributing to a comprehensive total rewards package. Benefits offerings may differ based on location.
