Job description

We are currently seeking a Mental Health Clinician to join a dynamic non-profit organization with a compelling mission and a successful track record of attracting, engaging and serving a high-risk population in strategies for personal, professional and community transformation. The new Mental Health Clinician (MHC) will be positioned for success and ongoing professional growth as YU develops the programs and practices that positions us as a national leader in youth leadership development and urban community transformation. Our mission is to transform East Oakland into a healthy and economically robust community by developing the leadership of youth and young adults and improving the systems that impact them. Located in the heart of East Oakland, YU is a neighborhood hub offering young people services and programs to increase physical and mental wellbeing, community connection, educational attainment, and career achievement among youth members.


Full Time Position-On-site
Compensation: $70,000-$85,000 commensurate with experience.

Summary

The Mental Health Clinician will provide comprehensive and culturally accessible mental health services to youth ages 13-24. This position requires a commitment and dedication to the community at large and a passion for working with inner city youth. Reporting to the Director of Health and Wellness the clinician serves a diverse population of youth, supporting the fulfillment of the mission and vision of our organization within our core operating values.

Responsibilities

Direct Services and Programming

  • Offer individual and group therapy, and clinical case management to a caseload of up to 20 youth per quarter, utilizing a range of therapeutic approaches.
  • Deliver counseling, intake assessments, clinical case management, and advocacy. Support clients and their families through tailored therapy and support services.
  • Engage collaboratively with team members to foster a positive program culture, manage conflicts constructively, and maintain effective communication.
  • Conduct brief risk assessments, mental health assessments, develop treatment plans with client input, and continuously evaluate and adjust these plans based on progress.
  • Maintain accurate and timely progress notes and other required documentation in accordance with established standards.
  • Guide young people through educational, justice, and other systems, providing necessary support and advocacy.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and forums (e.g., COST) to provide insights on adolescent and young adult mental health.
  • Facilitate and coordinate mental health services through outreach activities and participation in center-wide programming, events, and retreats.
  • Work closely with case managers and other staff to ensure integrated service delivery.
  • Deliver de-escalation and crisis intervention as needed to ensure client safety and support.

Partnerships

  • Support interdepartmental initiatives (e.g., Wellness Wednesday) to enhance program integration and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with partners such as Children's Hospital of Oakland/Castlemont Clinic while expanding our program and partnerships with other community organizations.
  • Facilitate coordination of mental health services with external providers through collaborative efforts and consultations.
  • Actively engage with Alameda County, OUSD, and other stakeholders to accurately communicate about Youth UpRising’s events and programs.
  • Organizational Responsibilities
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly meetings, departmental meetings, and individual supervision.
  • Complete all tasks as assigned by the supervisor, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the team.
  • Adhere to documentation requirements and standards, and assist with data collection and reporting as needed.
  • Maintain punctuality, and communicate any absences or delays to the Director of Health & Wellness promptly

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or a related field. BBS registered ACSW/AMFT or ACSW/LMFT
  • 3-5 years’ experience working as a mental health therapist, including experience working with inner city youth.
  • Knowledge of Alameda County community agencies and resources for adolescents and families is a plus.
  • A valid California Driver’s License, including reliable transportation, and current automobile insurance.
  • Availability for some evening and weekend work.
  • Spanish/English speaker is a plus.
