Program Manager, Research Operations (Hybrid - Brooklyn, NY)

Etsy
Internet company
- Brooklyn, NY
Job description
The Mom Project is excited to partner with Etsy in their search for a Senior Research Program Manager, Survey Operations to join their team on a contract basis. This role is hybrid onsite in Brooklyn, NY (working Tuesdays in-office + flexible either Wednesday or Thursday).
What's the role?
Etsy is looking for an experienced Senior Research Program Manager, Survey Operations to join our Quantitative Research team as a 6-month, full-time contractor.
In this role, you'll design and build the operating model and infrastructure that will let more researchers across Etsy conduct survey research independently, starting with a pilot program for experienced Product Researchers. Working in close partnership with Research Operations, Quantitative Research, and UX Research, you'll set up the systems, guardrails, and guidance that keep survey research high-quality, compliant, and respectful of our buyers' and sellers' time as access grows.
Your deep knowledge of survey research will shape everything you build, from the standards and non-negotiables in our playbook to the operational checks that help researchers launch with confidence.
What's this team like at Etsy?
The Research team at Etsy helps inspire product, marketing, and business decisions, using multi-method research to shape how we connect with buyers and sellers in our dynamic marketplace of unique items.
Our Quantitative Research team leads Etsy's major tracking programs, cross-marketplace research, and attitudinal measurement standards. We're now working to make survey research a shared practice across Quantitative, Market, and UX Research, and this role will help lay the foundation for that shift.
What does the day-to-day look like?
- Partner with Research Operations to co-build the survey operating infrastructure, including tooling configuration, account structure, permissions, naming conventions, and access request workflows
- Design and implement a survey portfolio registry that gives a central view of planned, live, and completed studies and connects to pre-launch checks
- Operationalize customer-contact and sample-availability rules, including suppression workflows, contact frequency limits, protected programs, and a process for coordinating sample across concurrent studies
- Work with Privacy and Legal to establish a baseline for PII handling, consent language, data storage and retention, and clear triggers for when additional review is needed
- Develop an Etsy-specific survey research playbook and onboarding that covers programming and QA workflows, launch and monitoring procedures, incident protocols, escalation paths, and the non-negotiables every survey must meet
- Help Quantitative and UX Research translate qualification criteria into practical materials, such as applied exercises, scoring rubrics, and debrief guides
- Define the governance and escalation model, distinguishing mandatory escalation (customer contact, privacy, protected programs, launch issues) from optional methodological consultation
- Support pilot measurement and evaluation, and help shape recommendations for scaling the model, including reusable resources like templates and question banks
Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.
Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
- 5+ years of experience that includes both conducting primary survey research and running survey operations
- Deep, end-to-end survey research expertise, including questionnaire design, sampling, weighting, survey programming, analysis, and reporting, with the ability to translate that expertise into clear standards and guidance for others
- Hands-on experience building and running survey operations, such as project tracking, sample management, contact frequency rules, and tooling and access administration in enterprise survey platforms like [Qualtrics]
- Proficiency in SQL, including writing queries to build sample lists, run suppression checks, and prepare audience uploads; familiarity with R or Python is a plus
- Working knowledge of privacy and data governance requirements (e.g., PII, GDPR, CCPA, consent, and retention), and experience partnering with Legal and Privacy teams
- Excellent documentation skills, with a track record of creating playbooks, onboarding materials, and processes that people actually use
- Strong program management skills, including scoping work, managing dependencies, and keeping multiple stakeholders aligned
- Sound judgment in balancing guardrails with researcher autonomy, and comfort building new systems in an evolving environment
- Experience using AI tools or automation to streamline research operations, including evaluating AI features in research tools against privacy and data governance requirements
Perks are available through our 3rd-Party Employer of Record (Available upon completion of waiting period for eligible arrangements)
Benefits: Medical, Dental, and 401k (no match)
