We are seeking a Senior 3D Character Artist on a contract basis to help support our customer’s business needs. This role is 100% remote.
The Senior Character Artist will be responsible for creating high-quality, realistic human characters and developing pipelines and workflows that set the standard for believable real-time assets. This role is highly collaborative, working closely with tech art, animation, engineering, and design teams during the pre-production phase to establish scalable processes and ensure optimal real-time performance.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with tech art, animation, and engineering teams to define character pipelines and workflows
- Translate concept art and reference into high-quality, realistic character models
- Model and texture high- and low-poly human characters and outfits, ensuring they meet technical, animation, and design requirements
- Create modular characters and contribute to kitbashing workflows for crowds
- Develop and optimize real-time hair and other detailed features
- Ensure assets are optimized for animation and real-time engine performance
- Collaborate with designers and gameplay engineers to integrate assets seamlessly
- Partner with producers to support planning and scheduling
- Work with engineering teams to evaluate and adopt new character technologies
- Provide guidance and clear feedback to vendors on asset quality and technical compliance
- Support blendshape and facial performance (FACS) development
Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional experience as a Senior Character Artist on AAA projects
- Demonstrated ability to create high-quality, realistic human models
- Proficiency in ZBrush, Maya, Marvelous Designer, and Substance Painter
- Strong knowledge of human anatomy and form
- Experience creating modular characters and kitbashing workflows
- Experience developing real-time hair assets
- Hands-on experience working with real-time engines such as Unity
- Proven ability to give and receive feedback in a collaborative environment
Preferred:
- Experience in VR development
- Experience in pre-production development cycles
- Experience with blendshapes and FACS-based facial animation
- Familiarity with rigging workflows
- Strong passion for games and interactive media
