Our Customer is an American financial services mutual organization based in Milwaukee. The financial security company provides consultation on wealth and asset income protection, education planning, retirement planning, investment advisory services, financial planning trust and private client services, estate planning and business planning. Its products include life insurance, permanent life insurance, disability income, and long-term care insurance; annuities; investments; and investment advisory products and services.
Our customer is looking for a Senior Data Engineer on a contract basis to help support their business needs.
This role is responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and supporting cloud‑based data and software solutions across the full software development lifecycle, adhering to centrally governed CI/CD pipelines and company development standards. This role partners closely with cross‑functional team members to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues, conduct thorough code reviews, and contribute to architectural and technical decision‑making while continuously recommending improvements to development and integration practices.
The engineer applies strong expertise in AWS, Python, Spark, SQL, data integration patterns (ETL/ELT, event streaming, and real‑time processing), infrastructure as code, containerization, and DevOps methodologies to deliver reliable, scalable, and high‑quality solutions, effectively communicating complex concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences and maintaining a strong focus on data quality, operational excellence, and production stability.
This role is on-site in Milwaukee, WI.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and deploy applications following the software development lifecycle and established development pipelines
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during development and deployment
- Conduct code reviews to ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices
- Contribute to technical discussions and decision-making within the team
- Collaborate with team members to align on technical approaches and solutions
- Identify and recommend improvements to development and continuous integration practices
- Support and contribute to system architecture considerations and design decisions
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
- 4+ years of professional experience with AWS
- 4+ years of experience with modern engineering tools, languages, and practices
- Experience delivering impactful technology solutions in production environments
- 2+ years of experience with data integration patterns and tools, including ETL/ELT, EII, replication, event streaming, and data virtualization
- Proficiency in Python, Apache Spark, and SQL
- Experience working in Agile and DevOps environments
- Strong understanding of database structures, data concepts, and data quality practices
- Experience with cloud-based development, including PaaS, SaaS, Docker, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform)
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices, such as unit testing and test-driven development
- Understanding of system design patterns and architecture principles
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Kubernetes, AWS Lambda, and containerization technologies
- Experience with domain data modeling and API-first design practices
- Strong focus on operational excellence, reliability, and performance optimization
- Experience breaking down features into actionable tasks for Agile teams
- Proven ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives
- Strong ability to deliver projects within timelines and overcome technical challenges
