Job description

The Mom Project is excited to partner with Orrick in their search for a Senior HR Business Partner. This is a hybrid position and could be based in any of their West Coast offices.

The Objective

The Senior HR Business Partner - Compliance and Immigration, plays a critical role in overseeing key compliance programs, and mitigating organizational risk by ensuring adherence to federal and state employment laws. This role also leads U.S. immigration processes, ensuring compliance with local regulations while streamlining visa applications and petitions.


What will I do?

You will spend most of your time with a fun and supportive team on these responsibilities.


Responsibilities:

  • Immigration Compliance: Oversee all aspects of the U.S. immigration process for international employees, including the preparation of visa applications, supporting documents, and petitions. Ensure compliance with local immigration laws and regulations, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of changes and updates in immigration policies. Act as the primary liaison with external immigration counsel, ensuring effective communication and collaboration to facilitate smooth immigration processes. Develop and implement immigration policies and procedures to streamline processes and ensure consistency across the organization. Manage and mentor the Senior Immigration Advisor, providing guidance and support to enhance team performance and development.
  • HR Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure adherence to hiring regulations, including background checks, EEO requirements, and federal/state employment laws. Serve as the primary HR contact for internal audits, regulatory reviews, and data privacy initiatives. Monitor and analyze changes in HR compliance laws, conducting audits to identify risks and implement corrective actions.
  • Regulatory Program Oversight: Oversee compliance programs, including I-9, immigration, employment law training, and OFCCP audit support. Manage HR compliance vendor relationships, ensuring system updates and regulatory alignment. Develop and execute compliance roadmaps, integrating compliance objectives into business strategies.
  • Policy Development & Training: Develop, update, and enforce HR policies to align with labor laws and best practices. Maintain and revise the employee handbook to ensure regulatory compliance and staff adherence. Design and deliver training programs on compliance policies, regulatory updates, and best practices.
  • Immigration Compliance: Oversee all aspects of the U.S. immigration process for international employees, including the preparation of visa applications, supporting documents, and petitions. Ensure compliance with local immigration laws and regulations, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of changes and updates in immigration policies. Act as the primary liaison with external immigration counsel, ensuring effective communication and collaboration to facilitate smooth immigration processes. Develop and implement immigration policies and procedures to streamline processes and ensure consistency across the organization. Manage and mentor the Senior Immigration Advisor, providing guidance and support to enhance team performance and development.
  • Process Improvement & Risk Mitigation: Audit HR processes to enhance efficiency, ensure compliance, and reduce risk exposure. Identify process improvement opportunities and work with stakeholders to implement best practices. Conduct horizon scanning to stay ahead of emerging HR compliance requirements and proactively adjust policies.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Partner with internal teams (Data Privacy, Office of General Counsel, Payroll, and Benefits) to ensure compliance across HR functions. Prepare and submit compliance reports to senior leadership and regulatory authorities. Act as an internal consultant, advising business leaders on compliance-related risks and mitigation strategies. Develop and manage communication plans to keep stakeholders informed on compliance programs, risks, and regulatory updates.


Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Human Resources, Law, Business Administration, or a related field; advanced degree or certification in immigration law is a plus.

  • Experience: 10 + years HRBP experience in a professional services environment. Minimum of 5 years of experience in managing U.S. immigration processes with a proven track record of handling complex immigration cases and compliance issues.

  • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of U.S. immigration laws and regulations, including various visa categories and compliance requirements.

  • Skills: Strong leadership and management skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and high attention to detail in managing immigration documentation.

  • Compliance Knowledge: Familiarity with HR compliance requirements and best practices.

  • Problem-Solving: Ability to navigate complex immigration scenarios and provide strategic solutions.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected salary range for this position is:

  • California Major Markets* $155,000 - $200,000
  • National $135,000 - $165,000

* California Major Markets includes San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Orange County, Santa Monica. All other California locations fall within National range.

The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant experience or education, particular skills or expertise, geography. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
