Job description

The Mom Project is excited to support Etsy with their search for a Senior Legal Counsel to join their team on a contract basis.

Please note - This is a 30 hour/week contract role through late July 2026.

What’s the role?

This position will play a key role in advising the business on complex, fast-evolving regulatory and competition matters across Etsy’s global marketplace. You’ll partner closely with cross-functional teams to translate legal requirements into practical, business-ready guidance across a range of areas, including consumer protection, product safety, competition, content regulation, payments, and intellectual property. A core part of the role is engaging with regulators and government authorities around the world—both directly and in coordination with outside counsel. You’ll help shape Etsy’s regulatory strategy and support responses to inquiries and investigations.

This role requires strong judgment and the ability to balance legal risk with business priorities. You’ll work closely with Trust & Safety, Product, Engineering, and business teams to advise on new initiatives, helping to identify risks early and develop practical, solutions-oriented paths forward. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity, distilling complex legal concepts into clear guidance, and prioritizing in a dynamic environment. You’re collaborative, pragmatic, and excited to contribute to a mission-driven platform supporting creative entrepreneurs worldwide.

Responsibilities:

  • You’ll help drive strategy and assist in the company’s engagement with regulators and government agencies across the world, interfacing with authorities both directly and with outside counsel. Your work will broadly span tech and e-commerce industry subject matters, including: consumer protection, platform-to-business regulation, privacy, content moderation, and IP. You will also work on global competition and antitrust matters. Experience working with global regulators, as well as the FTC, DOJ, CSPC, EPA, and California and New York regulators, is a plus.
  • You’ll advise business teams on existing, new, and potential future laws and regulations as they design innovative products and tools. You’ll give sound and practical legal advice, and balance legal risk with commercial, operational, resourcing, compliance, and privacy interests and constraints.
  • You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams in all of this work, leveraging strong communication and project management skills to get the most from business partners, Legal teammates, and outside counsel.
  • You’ll collaborate with the Government Relations teams to analyze new and potential laws, interpret the evolving regulatory landscape, and develop an engagement strategy.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • You have significant (8+ years) experience handling regulatory inquiries and/or related matters. Your professional experience includes some combination of law firm, government, and/or in-house work. Prior experience in antitrust/competition, litigation, and/or compliance issues for a technology/ecommerce/platform is strongly desired.
  • You are licensed to practice in at least one US state, preferably in New York or California.
  • You are an exceptional communicator -- verbally and in writing. You can speak thoughtfully to engage with and learn from technical experts; you can also distill and explain complex matters to business partners, engineers, and leaders using plain English, without legal jargon.
  • You have great instincts and even better judgment. You know when to say “no”, when to say “yes” or “maybe, but...”, and also know when to raise concerns. You are mindful that the company is your client, and are savvy in your advocacy for and protection of your client.
  • You pay attention to detail and have exceptionally strong organizational skills. You embrace goal setting and accountability. You know how to multitask, and you have excellent time management skills.
  • You have experience managing people, and/or leading without authority, including remote, cross-functional, and dotted-line colleagues.
  • You are comfortable answering new questions, solving uncharted problems, and working collaboratively with business teams to meet the needs of our fast-paced environment.
  • You have deep experience with US and key state regulatory frameworks on consumer protection, competition, and content/IP regulation, and you’re comfortable advising on those topics for international markets.
  • You have excellent business, negotiation, and presentation skills. You’re comfortable speaking to senior leaders. While we expect you to be able to read a spreadsheet and build a deck, you should also be able to analyze and communicate the information into a simple, effective message to others.
  • You are a true teammate. You volunteer to help, you are excited by new projects, you aren’t afraid to ask or answer a question, and you step up when a colleague needs a second set of hands.
  • You could work in many places, but you recognize that having the chance to contribute impactful work and grow a company with an amazing mission is a rare opportunity.

Hours and Location:

  • Monday–Friday, 30 hrs/week
  • This role is remote with EST hours.
