Job description

The Mom Project is excited to support Etsy with their search for a Senior Software Engineer to join their team on a contract basis.

About The Team

On the Ads Marketplace team, we help sellers grow their businesses by building algorithmic solutions that power Etsy’s on-site advertising platform. Our work includes developing and productionizing systems that leverage machine learning, optimization, and algorithmic design to support real-time bidding and budget pacing.

At Etsy, we believe that code is craft and that the work we do is part of a larger creative culture represented by the artists and designers who make Etsy such a unique marketplace. We believe that small, empowered, self-motivated teams can do big things. We measure and test our work, take advantage of our pioneering continuous deployment system, and cultivate a blameless culture based on trust and a commitment to learning.

About The Role

This is a great role for someone who enjoys:

Cross-functional collaboration: Partnering with Applied Scientists and ML engineers to translate complex algorithmic concepts into robust, production-ready backend logic.

Data reasoning: You might audit an ETL pipeline or the auction simulator and reason through the logic of the data, understanding the "why" behind the analytics, even if you aren't the one building the models.

Tech-Agnostism: Our tech stack spans auction code in Scala, a budget service written in Go fronting a Redis cache, an auction simulator written in Python, and underpinning Spark jobs / Airflow DAGs. In a world of evolving tools, you prioritize systems-thinking over syntax. You are adept at using modern AI assistants to bridge the gap between our diverse codebases, ensuring that your deep well of experience is applied to the logic and data flow rather than being slowed down by language-specific nuances.

Requirements:

Must-Haves:

  • 7+ years of backend or systems engineering experience
  • Strong debugging chops
  • Excellent communication and willingness to support your team’s success by offering ideas and support when needed
  • A sense of self-direction, and ability to pathfind and learn quickly

Hours and Location:

  • M-F, 40 hours/week
  • Open to remote with EST hours, but would prefer on-site in Brooklyn

We offer a competitive salary range for this position. Most candidates who join our team are hired at the median of this range, ensuring fair and equitable compensation based on experience and qualifications.

All applicants applying for U.S. job openings must be legally authorized to work in the United States and are required to have U.S. residency at the time of application.
