Job description

***Please note that our customer is currently not considering applicants from the following locations: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee.***

Our Customer is a corporation that develops, manufactures, and markets robotic products designed to improve clinical outcomes of patients through minimally invasive surgery. Founded in 1995, their goal was to create innovative, robotic-assisted systems that help empower doctors and hospitals to make surgery less invasive than an open approach. Working with the top medical professionals, they continue to develop new, minimally invasive surgical platforms and future diagnostic tools to help solve complex healthcare challenges around the world.

We are seeking a Senior Visual Designer on a contract basis to support our Customer's business needs. This role is hybrid (3 days onsite and 2 days remote/week) in Sunnyvale, CA.

You’ll be an individual contributor focused on evolving the company's visual language and system, ensuring its consistent expression across our platform. You'll work closely with our partners in the Product, Engineering, and Human Factors groups to take ideas from concept to implementation.

You’ll apply the company's visual design system vocabulary to some of our most vital surgeon-facing applications to make our digital applications visually consistent, compelling, and delightful to use.

The ideal candidate is passionate about intentional aesthetics and the critical role design systems play in product continuity. This candidate should have experience designing end-to-end user interfaces for a wide range of products and services. You'll play a key role in providing meaningful information to surgeons at the right place and time.

All applications must include a link to an online portfolio. If a password is required, your application must include the portfolio password. Applications lacking portfolios will not be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a body of knowledge on clinical knowledge and practice to build familiarity with the clinical context and use of products and services.
  • Employ storytelling skills to communicate design decisions verbally and visually gaining consensus from broader product and research partners
  • Collaborate with senior designers and engineers to deliver pixel-perfect designs and documentation in regular release cycles.
  • Translate visual language principles into clear, actionable documentation and guidelines for widespread adoption by design and engineering teams.
  • Partner with the broader Visual Design team to drive consistency across the company's product ecosystem and contribute to the creation and refinement of UI components, patterns, and template libraries—ensuring each element meets high visual craft standards and aligns with accessibility goals.
  • Assist in the production of scalable assets such as icons and illustrations, with a strong emphasis on systematic design thinking.
  • Follow product and deliverable timelines working with cross-functional teams to prioritize project work accordingly.
  • Participate in design reviews and QA processes to ensure fidelity and consistency across all feature implementations.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in visual design, product design, or similar roles, ideally within tech or digital product environments.
  • Passion for visual craft, a systematic approach to design, and a strong foundation in tools like Figma.
  • Proficiency in Figma and industry-standard tools (Adobe Creative Suite, After Effects, or equivalent).
  • A portfolio that demonstrates excellent visual craft and systematic thinking, particularly in areas such as iconography, illustration, typography, or motion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and communicate visual decisions with clarity.
  • Systematic in your approach to design, with a strong eye for detail and consistency.
  • Eager to learn, iterate, and contribute to a growing, evolving visual system.
  • Comfortable balancing craft with constraints, and creativity with scalability.
  • Open to feedback and passionate about cross-functional collaboration.
  • Excited by the idea of shaping a visual language and design system that reaches millions of users every day.

We offer a competitive salary range for this position. Most candidates who join our team are hired at the median of this range, ensuring fair and equitable compensation based on experience and qualifications.
