Job description

Our Customer is a corporation that develops, manufactures, and markets robotic products designed to improve clinical outcomes of patients through minimally invasive surgery. Founded in 1995, their goal was to create innovative, robotic-assisted systems that help empower doctors and hospitals to make surgery less invasive than an open approach. Working with the top medical professionals, they continue to develop new, minimally invasive surgical platforms and future diagnostic tools to help solve complex healthcare challenges around the world.


We are seeking a UI/Human Factors Engineer on a contract basis to support our Customer's business needs. This role is on-site in Sunnyvale, CA.



Responsibilities:


Instrumentation & Experimentation

  • Build and validate experimental conditions within both virtual and physical environments.
  • Develop and validate novel and off-the-shelf (OTS) bioinstrumentation and psychometrics to reliably measure individual differences in human performance.
  • Create experimental setups to evaluate human performance metrics in lab-based and field-based conditions.

Data Science & Engineering

  • Extract, transform, process, analyze, and visualize data from biometrics, psychometrics, and system data logs.
  • Prototype, design, test, and deliver high-quality software in Python or C++ for machine learning performance modeling.
  • Develop and maintain Snowflake and Databricks pipelines.
  • Execute end-to-end testing of ETL processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and data integrity.
  • Perform data validation tasks, including pre-screening raw data, integrity checks, aggregation, reconciliation, and report testing.
  • Create and analyze test strategies, scope, and test cases for research projects.
  • Develop and maintain data infrastructure to capture, synchronize, and process multiple sources of research data.
  • Manage governance of data sharing internally and externally.
  • Update system configurations to ensure reliable data capture pipelines.

Collaboration & Reporting

  • Work closely with engineering, commercial, clinical, and regulatory teams.
  • Translate complex research data into actionable insights and communications for stakeholders.
  • Apply user-centered design and human factors engineering principles in product development.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Psychology, Biomechanics, Human-Computer Interaction, Robotics, or related field.
  • Minimum 6 years of relevant research and engineering experience in product development.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience leading data science in human subjects research.
  • Proficiency in processing and analyzing large quantitative datasets from human subjects and robotic systems.
  • Strong ability to integrate mixed-methods research data into actionable communications.
  • Experience designing experimental conditions in both virtual and physical environments.
  • Excellent verbal communication, presentation, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% per quarter.
  • Primarily office-based, set schedule.


Preferred:

  • Experience with data science applications.
  • Experience with bioinstrumentation.
  • Background in medical devices or other regulated industries.
